It’s important for kids to start organizing their events, but it’s most important for you to be active in the process. Implementing whichever form of scheduling you see fit at a young age will set the foundation for how kids organize later in life. There are hundreds of options as to how you can effectively organize your kid’s schedules, but these three tips are generic and can be used no matter which route you choose.
Focus on the family unit by detailing each specific person as a color on a giant magnetic calendar you can post on the refrigerator. In allotting everyone a color to be for the month, they can write on the giant calendar their plans and to-do items. This process enables the family to not only hold each other accountable, but to be present and active in helping and supporting the events on the calendar seen each day.
If your children are younger, try setting a routine for them to get in the habit of. Once that habit is set, add on another routine so they get used to maximizing their down time. For example, make morning rituals or after-school tasks that are constant each day. (Come home, put backpack in room, bring papers for parents to sign, do homework together, eat dinner, take a bath, read a book, go to sleep…)
Once they get older, maximizing their down-time will become second nature since you have exposed them to the process at a young age. Plus, when they can have their own planner to sort through, they will acquire a sense of responsibility in scheduling homework, social time, etc. |
